Solvers often bet hands that look weak, check hands that look strong, and fold hands that still have equity.
These decisions can feel arbitrary when we focus only on the strength of an individual hand. They become much easier to understand when we look at the underlying incentives behind each solver action: what each action gains, what it gives up, how its EV compares to the alternatives, and the role it plays in our overall range.
Throughout this article, we will use two examples from 100BB BTN vs BB SRPs at NL50.
On AK5, BTN must decide which hands to bet or check. Later, on K95, BB must decide which hands should raise, call, or fold facing a c-bet. These two spots will help us examine the incentives behind each poker action.
Every decision is an EV comparison
The strategy shown by a solver is one where every action maximizes Expected Value (EV).
An action does not need to be especially profitable on its own. It only needs to perform better than the alternatives.
For example, the EV of taking different actions with AK is as follows:
As we can see, all actions are quite profitable, as AK is a strong hand on this board. However, we prefer to bet 125% exclusively as it is the highest EV option.
The size of the EV difference also matters.
When betting and checking have similar EVs, the hand may mix between both actions:
In the same strategy, AT has nearly identical EVs for different actions, which explains its mixing of frequencies. If one action performed significantly better than the others, the solver would use it almost exclusively.
To understand why an action is higher EV, ask two questions:
- What does this action accomplish?
- Why does it perform better than the alternatives?
Why we bet
Betting creates value in two main ways:
- growing a pot we expect to win
- making our opponent fold out equity
Most bets gain value from some combination of both. Strong value hands benefit primarily from calls, bluffs primarily benefit from folds, and many hands lie somewhere between the two.
Using our previous example, AK is a clear instance of a hand that wants to grow the pot. When we bet, we get called by worse Ax and Kx, and can likely continue betting on future streets.
On the other hand, AT also benefits from worse hands calling, as there are still many worse Ax, but its incentives are less extreme, and more of its value comes from denying equity to hands that have a chance of improving against it.
Finally, a hand like QJ has a very different reason to bet. It has little showdown value, but it can make better hands fold and has potential to improve or keep bluffing on future streets.
All these hands bet, but they do not bet for the same reasons. This is why the distinction between “value bet” and “bluff” is incomplete. Betting incentives exist on a spectrum.
Why we check
Checking is not the absence of a strategy, nor is it passive or weak.
Consider QQ. It is currently ahead of many hands in BB’s range, but betting accomplishes relatively little.
If we think about the incentives for betting, almost every worse hand will fold to our bet, so we gain little from calls. Additionally, the hands that BB folds already have minimal equity against QQ, so we get minimal benefit from folds.
Checking allows QQ to retain its showdown value and realize its equity.
Weaker hands may also check because they are poor bluffing candidates. A hand with poor blockers and few profitable turn barrels may gain less from betting than a hand with more future potential, such as QJ. A range usually contains far more weak hands than it can profitably bluff, so some of them must check and give up.
Strong hands can check as well. If every strong hand bet 100% of the time, our checking range would become weak and easy to attack. Some strong hands may therefore mix or even check exclusively to support the rest of the checking range.
AA is a clear example. Despite being the strongest possible hand, it almost always checks in this spot. The reason becomes clearer when we look at BB’s response to our bet:
Most of BB’s calls come from Ax, which we heavily block when we hold AA. It therefore makes a lot less from calls than other strong value hands. It needs almost no protection from future cards, so we gain little from folding out equity as well.
Because its incentive to bet is lower than that of our other value hands, AA becomes a natural candidate for strengthening the checking range.
The important question is not whether checking is attractive in isolation. It is whether checking earns more than betting, while accounting for the rest of our range.
When facing a bet
To understand the incentives behind raising, calling, and folding, we will switch to our second example, specifically the BB’s response to a 75% pot c-bet in a BTN vs BB SRP 100BB deep at 50NL on the flop K95.
The exact same EV framework still applies. Each hand should raise, call, or fold according to which action earns the most, not just how strong the hand appears.
Why we raise
Raising follows many of the same incentives as betting. Value raises want to grow a pot we expect to win, while bluff raises benefit from making the opponent fold out equity.
On K95, BB’s combos of 99, 55, and K9 are natural value-raising candidates, and can get called by many weaker hands.
However, these hands do not all raise 100% of the time. Keeping some strong hands in our calling range is crucial to prevent it from becoming too weak.
In contrast, a hand like QJ has a different incentive for raising. It has little showdown value, but can make stronger hands fold, as well as improve or keep bluffing on later streets. These properties make it a better bluff-raising candidate than hands with less potential to improve or continue bluffing.
Not every strong hand should raise, and not every weak hand should bluff. We should raise the hands that benefit the most from building the pot or generating folds, while assigning the remaining hands to calls and folds.
Why we call
Calling is often preferred when a hand is too strong to fold but gains little from raising.
Consider A9. It is ahead of bluffs, draws, and weaker pairs, but raising will result in many of those hands folding, and when we do get called we will almost always be facing a much stronger range.
Calling keeps BTN’s bluffs and weaker hands in the pot while avoiding unnecessary action against the stronger parts of their betting range.
The same idea applies to many medium-strength hands. Almost all of our single pair hands have enough equity to continue, but raising would isolate them against a stronger range. Calling lets us realize our equity without unnecessarily building the pot.
As a rule of thumb, if raising forces worse hands to fold and stronger hands to continue, calling will often earn more.
A call is profitable when the hand has enough equity against the betting range at the price offered, after accounting for equity realization. For more on the required price, see our guide on pot odds.
Why we fold
Folding gives up the pot, but that does not make it a weak action. It is the correct decision whenever investing more chips performs worse than simply letting the hand go.
Suppose we are holding AQ as the BB, which always folds against the 75% pot bet. Our hand may look strong, and it could improve on later streets, but it has little immediate equity, limited showdown value, and very few runouts where it can confidently continue against further aggression.
Calling would require us to invest more chips with a hand that frequently misses and may face a turn or river barrel, and raising would turn it into a bluff despite better candidates being available elsewhere in our range.
Folding avoids those future losses entirely.
A hand can therefore have equity and still be a clear fold. The important question is not whether the hand could improve, but whether it can realize enough equity to justify the price of continuing.
Every hand plays a role
Although we hold only one hand, that hand is a part of an entire range. Facing a c-bet, BB’s range needs:
- strong hands that raise for value
- weaker hands that raise as a bluff
- medium-strength hands that call
- strong hands that sometimes call instead of raising
- weak hands that fold
The goal is not simply to decide whether a hand can bet, check, raise, call, or fold. It is to determine which role it fills better than the other hands in our range.
Once we understand what each action accomplishes, poker strategy becomes a process of identifying the roles our range needs and choosing the best hands to fill them.
Common mistakes
Beginners often:
- choose an action based only on hand strength
- assume every strong hand should bet or raise
- assume every weak hand should bluff
- label each bet as purely value or purely a bluff
- call because a hand has equity, without considering whether it can realize it
- judge an action in isolation without comparing its EV with the alternatives
- treat checking, calling, and folding as passive rather than purposeful actions
- forget that every hand must fill a role within our overall range
